Information about your 2G and 3G devices using Matooma SIM cards due to the Shutdown of 2G/3G Networks

As previously communicated in May 2024, French operators have announced the progressive shutdown of 2G and 3G networks. Below is a reminder of the shutdown dates:

  • Orange: by the end of 2025 for 2G and the end of 2028 for 3G

  • Bouygues Telecom: by the end of 2026 for 2G and the end of 2029 for 3G

  • SFR: by the end of 2026 for 2G and the end of 2028 for 3G

Following the planned shutdown of these technologies, connected devices that are not compatible with more recent cellular technologies such as 4G or 5G will no longer be able to connect to the aforementioned operators' networks.

As a reminder, for equipment to operate on 4G networks, three prerequisites are necessary:

  • A 4G-compatible SIM card,

  • A 4G-compatible subscription,

  • A 4G-compatible module (hardware).

It is important to note that voice calls are currently made via "circuit/GSM" mode on 2G or 3G networks. Once these networks are completely decommissioned, no voice or SMS communications will be possible on these technologies.

Currently, features such as VoLTE and SMSoIP are not yet available for multi-operator IoT SIM cards across all SIM card providers. Telecom operators are working on the integration and interconnection necessary to provide these services before the complete shutdown of 2G.

Following an analysis of IMEIs reported by operators, it appears that some of your active SIM cards are being used in devices that include modules only compatible with 2G and/or 3G.

It is therefore essential that you replace these devices and modules before the aforementioned dates to ensure the continuity of your services.

If you need to replace your equipment, the Matooma team remains at your disposal to advise and guide you towards the best connectivity solutions for your new cellular hardware.

We remain available to assist you during this technological transition.
